Skiers who want an adrenaline rush usually hire a helicopter. Lance Nelson found a cheaper, equally thrilling alternative being towed at breakneck speeds by a horse.

The 40-year-old competes in skijoring, a sport in which skiers clutch a 50-foot rope attached to one or more horses or dogs. Skijoring derives from the Norwegian word “skikjøring,” meaning “ski driving,” and it is believed to have originated in Scandinavia in the 1850s as a form of winter transportation.
