Condemns killing of people in Dima Hasao, Assam

North-East Forum for International Solidarity (NEFIS) today participated in a protest demonstration at Assam Bhawan, Chanakyapuri to condemn the killing of civilians who were protesting against the state BJP Government in Dima Hasao district of Assam.

It should be noted that the people were fired upon by the police, while protesting against the comments made by a prominent RSS activist on the inclusion of parts of the district in Greater Nagalim under the plan which has come to be known as the RSS Draft Plan on Naga Accord. Several people were also injured in the shootout by the police.

The killings are a result of the growing RSS interference in the region which seeks to fulfill its political agenda by inciting communities against each other.

The incitement is part of its agenda to curb people’s rights through the state BJP govt and further entrench the oppression being faced by the communities in the region, since decades.

Also, another disturbing development since the BJP came into power in the state, is the rising instances of police killings wherein peaceful demonstrations are fired upon, to further escalate tensions between the communities in the region.

NEFIS demands that the state Chief Minister should publicly apologize for the incident and those responsible for the killing including Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police should be suspended and criminal cases should be filed against them.

A high-level commission of inquiry should also be instituted to probe the rising instances of police and para-military killings in the North-East.

NEFIS stands for communal harmony between different communities and condemns state govt’s role in inciting enmity between them. NEFIS would be intensifying its campaign for a united people’s struggle against state repression in the coming days.
