Doctor, advocate and cop among six held for fake insurance claims in Rajasthan

The special operations group (SOG) of Rajasthan Police Friday arrested six people, including a government doctor and an assistant sub inspector, on the charges of fraudulently claiming insurance money with fake documents of death of a living man.

The police are looking for the man and his wife, who was nominee in the insurance policies. They have also been charged with being part of the racket, police said.

Additional director general of police (SOG) Umesh Mishra said they will take custody of the six accused to interrogate them and get to the bottom of the racket. “These people could be involved in other cases of fraudulent insurance claims,” he said.

Mishra said a case of fake insurance claim was registered at Kotwali police station in Dausa district on October 10 last year. A similar case was later registered at Ramgarh Pachwara police station in the district. Rajasthan police chief transferred the two cases to the SOG for interrogation because it seemed like the handiwork of an organized gang.

The ADG said SOG team headed by additional SP Karan Sharma was looking into the racket under the supervision of DIG Sanjay Shotriya.

In the first case, SOG officers found that Raghuraj Singh (36) of Delhi, who ran a company for verifying insurance claims since 2008, colluded with two people of Delhi – Yash Chauhan and Rajesh Kumar (48) working at Union Bank of India. The three later got in touch with three others in Dausa – advocate Chaturbhuj Meena (48), government doctor Satish Kumar Khandelwal (54) and assistant sub-inspector Ramesh Chand (49) – and bought insurance policies of different companies in the name of Jitendra Singh, who is an auto-driver in Delhi.

Later, the ASI made a fake entry about Singh’s death in police records and got a fake post-mortem report prepared with the help of government doctor. On the basis of these documents, Singh’s wife claimed Rs 16 lakh from the insurance companies. The money was distributed among all of them.

The fraud came to light when an official of one of the insurance companies came to Dausa for inquiries and found out the documents related to Singh’s death were fake. He registered a case at Kotwali police station in October 2017.

In the second case, the six accused bought insurance policies in the name of a man who had died of cancer six months ago. The man’s brother was involved in the fraud. For claiming the insurance money, these people prepared fake documents but could not get an entry in the police records before the first case was reported. Also police in the district smelt a rat because the doctor who had prepared the post-mortem report in both cases was same.

Police later arrested the man’s brother.
