EAST PEORIA — Washington St. Patrick's quest for its first basketball state championship ended Thursday with a 44-27 loss to Lovejoy in the Illinois Elementary School Association seventh-grade boys Class 1A state finals.
Mitch Coughlon scored 13 to lead the Irish (23-4), who fell one game short of the school's first title since the 1986 girls track team and field won gold. Coughlon scored 63 points for St. Patrick's in the three games played at East Peoria Central Junior High School.
Lovejoy (18-3) wins the school's second state title in any sport, to go with its 2008 eighth-grade boys basketball title.
Class 3A
WENONA — The third-place game between Farmington Central (25-2) and Glenwood Brookwood (13-4) was postponed, according to the IESA website.
Social media posts from Farmington and the IESA indicated the game would be rescheduled.
The championship game was played at its scheduled time as Springfield Lincoln (22-2) beat Teutopolis, 31-26.
ELSEWHERE: The Class 4A games at Normal Kingsley were postponed. ... Decatur Robertson beat Bloomington Corpus Christi, 58-26, for the Class 2A championship at Germantown Hills Middle School.
