Since 1987, WHYY-FM, a public radio station based in Philadelphia, has produced a daily, one-hour national edition of Fresh Air. The program is broadcast on nearly 600 stations, and it became the first nondrivetime show in public radio history to reach more than 5 million listeners a week.

Fresh Air with Terry Gross has received numerous awards, including the Peabody Award in 1994. Gross received the Corporation for Public Broadcasting's Edward R. Murrow Award in 2003 for her contributions to public radio. In 2015, she was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. "With her poignant insights on current events and unique perspective into the minds of global leaders, I am confident Terry Gross will provide a captivating and inspiring narrative for our members."
