Oldest patient with Birth Heart Defect treated

For the first time at SKY Hospital, Imphal a 55 years old women called Mrs. Achung Runthan from Ukhrul District, who was born with a big hole in the heart called Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD). She presented to SKY on 14/01/2018 with increasing breathlessness and palpitation after seeing a number of specialists in and outside Manipur.

She had Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension (PAH) with which she was considered a high risk patient for open heart surgery for the closure of the hole (VSD). After careful assessment of her cardiovascular haemodynamic, she was given the option of Device closure of the hole without surgery. Mrs. Achung Runthan consented for the high risk device closure procedure. The procedure was performed on 18/01/2018.

The 12 mm device diameter called Amplatzer VSD Occluder Device (American made) was implanted inside the heart via the right femoral vessels at the level of groin. The Device closure procedure took 1 hour 32 minutes and was a complete success.

Immediately after the implantation of the Device across the hole closing it, check angiogram using Philip’s Cath Lab Machine and GE made Echocardiographic Machine showed no residual flow at the VSD (hole) site. Half an hour later the patient could talk and started eating and drinking. Patient went home on 26/01/2018.

Dr. L. Shyamkishore, Chief Cardiologist& Chairman of SKY Hospital, expressed happiness in saving the life of the patient who had been suffering for so long without a curative treatment. He further asserted that such patient who is traditionally treated with open heart surgery may be given an opportunity / option for non-operative Device Closure of the hole in the heart at SKY Hospital, Imphal.¬
