Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal today said literature is the bedrock of any civilization and it is through books a society can pass over its culture and traditions to the future generations. Literature is the society's mirror and reflects its strengths and weaknesses, Sonowal said after inaugurating the second edition of Brahmaputra Literary Festival here. "Considering the immense power of literature, we want our youth to dedicate themselves to literary and cultural activities.
This literary event is not just a festival but an investment made for a strong and vibrant future," he said. The chief minister hoped that the festival will open new opportunities for exchange of ideas among the youths and guide them in the art of creative writing. "This intellectual exchange will definitely inspire our youth, encourage new ideas and promote the habit of reading among them," he added. Sonowal urged authors to focus more on pressing issues of the modern times such as climate change, degenerating ethical and human values, need for harmony and peaceful co-existence. "Literature of the region must also highlight our relations with the ASEAN countries since the days of the Ramayana and Mahabharata," he said. The CM also stressed on the need for translation of literary works in regional languages for the benefit of readers across all sections of the society. The three-day literary event has been jointly organized by the National Book Trust and Assam Publication Board.
