Rockford police capture teenagers, recover gun after foot chase

ROCKFORD — Police captured three of four suspects who fled from a stolen Jeep Patriot that crashed Tuesday into the yard of a residence in the 2300 block of 18th Avenue.

Tre'Quan Stamper-Ashford, and Darel Harrison Jr., both 18, of Rockford, are charged with resisting arrest and criminal trespass to a vehicle. A 17-year-old Rockford boy whose name was not released because of his age, is charged with unlawful use of a weapon by a gang member, unlawful possession of a firearm, criminal trespass to a vehicle and resisting arrest.

Rockford Police Department officers were patrolling the area of Broadway and Ninth Street about 1 p.m. Tuesday when they spotted a vehicle that had been reported stolen to the Freeport Police Department. The vehicle fled southbound on 19th Street during an attempted traffic stop.

Although officers say they didn't chase the vehicle, they followed at a distance until it crashed in a yard. Four suspects ran from the crash and three were captured after a short foot chase. Police found a handgun inside the stolen vehicle.

The case remains under investigation. Police are asking for the public’s help in identifying and locating the fourth suspect. Anyone with information is asked to contact detectives at 779-500-6551 or anonymously to Rockford Area Crime Stoppers at 815-963-7867.
