KGMU urology department resident doctors complain against faculty

In a letter to the vice chancellor, several resident doctors of the department of urology at the King George’s Medical University have alleged that they are made to do personal work of the teachers in the department.

The matter has been referred by the vice chancellor’s office to the head of the urology department for a detailed report on the issue. “We shall take statements from the resident doctors and probe the matter to find out the truth behind the allegations,” said Prof SN Sankhwar, head of the department.

In the letter , the residents said, “We are daily abused on non work related issues and foul language is used against us. Almost every day, one of the residents is called during off-duty hours to go and see patients related to them (teachers) admitted to other departments.”

Residents also alleged that one of them was made to sit with the receptionist at the OPD so that patients were divided among faculty as per their wish. “Spending our time as resident doctors in their team is like spending time in a torture chamber,” said the letter, signed by 19 resident doctors, with copies sent to human rights commission, Medical Council of India, health minister and chief minister’s office.

Resident doctors also alleged that their duty roster was made in such a manner that they could be posted to take care of the relatives of the teachers admitted to various departments.

A notice to the teachers will also be served to get their statements on the allegations.
