A speech and hearing impaired young woman was raped allegedly by a middle-aged man at a wheat field in Bromonkanda village under Bhanga upazila of the district on Wednesday afternoon.
The accused is Inal Sheikh, 42, of the village in the upazila, said Bhanga police.
Locals said Inal forcefully took the 22-year-old woman of the village to the field in the area around 4:00pm. He later raped her.
Hearing the screams of the woman, the villagers rushed to the spot, rescued the victim and caught Inal red-handed.
But at one stage, some local influential people, led by the family members of Inal's in-laws' house, took him away from the captivity of the mob.
Later, the victim's mother filed a rape case with Bhanga Police Station under Women and Children Repression Prevention Act, said Miraz Hossain, officer-in-charge of the police station.
The woman was sent to Faridpur Medical College Hospital for medical test, said the OC.
