The rupee
on Friday
opened with a loss of 15 paise at 64.41 against the dollar on fears that the regime of lower borrowing costs is nearing its end with a quicker removal of easy monetary policy by central banks worldwide.
More buying of the American currency by banks and importers only hastened the fall.
The local currency on Thursday had gained 2 paise to end at 64.26 against the dollar.
Domestic stock markets opened in the red, reflecting the renewed selloff on Wall Street. The Dow tanked over 1,000 points in overnight trade.
The BSE Sensex tumbled over 500 points to 33,868. The NSE Nifty index declined 175 points to 10,400 in the early session.
Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) sold off shares worth a net Rs 2,297.09 crore on Thursday , showed provisional data. Domestic institutional investors (DIIs) bought shares worth a net Rs 2,373.59 crore.
For a change, government bonds jumped yesterday as investors took comfort from RBI's less than expected hawkish outlook on inflation.
