BAMBOLIM: Town and Country planning minister Vijai Sardesai on Friday questioned the need for multiple agencies to collect garbage in the state and said that the Goa Waste Management Corporation should be the sole agency to collect and treat garbage. Speaking at Goa Bizfest, Sardesai also said that it was the government's responsibility to treat and eliminate garbage.

"There is the solid waste corporation. It should be dealing with all waste everywhere. It can't be said that this waste is of the panchayat and that waste is of the municipality," Sardesai said in his address at the Shyama Prasad Mukherjee stadium.

"The process that is going on now, is wrong. When you have multiple power centers, you don't have a solution. We have the tourism department which is collecting beach waste. They are not supposed to collect beach waste," Sardesai said.

Speaking a bit earlier, managing director of Goa Waste Management Corporation Sanjit Rodrigues said that each individual should make an effort to segregate and reduce garbage. Sardesai disagreed with this and said that people had elected the government to find solutions.
