LIMA — The Lima Symphony Orchestra is hoping to bring a little bit of a Mardi Gras feeling to Lima when they perform “Carnival of Colors” Saturday at Veterans Memorial Civic Center.

“It’s a really beautiful concert because when we came up with the title we were thinking, it’s February, we were thinking kind of a Mardi Gras feeling because we have Petrushka by Stravinsky, which is actually a ballet suite and then the other piece that the orchestra is playing themselves is from Wagner’s Das Rheingold. So these are very mystical pieces, very colorful pieces, you could go as far as saying they are very exotic. But they’re both artistic and passionate pieces and they have those art connections,” said Sara Chongson, marketing and ticketing coordinator for the Lima Symphony Orchestra.

In between the orchestra’s playing, guest artist and saxophone player Connor Mikula will be performing.

“You wouldn’t think of the saxophone as a major classical instrument. You think you come to hear a soloist with the symphony, it might be a cellist or a violin player, but the saxophone isn’t featured as often, but it’s really quite a colorful and versatile instrument,” said Chongson.

Mikula is an award-winning saxophonist having competed for and winning coveted awards. He has won both national and international competitions, most recently winning the Cortona, Italy, New Music Sessions solo competition. He was named a Yamaha Young Performing Artist.

“Connor, being so young, he has mastered a lot of the technique and he really does an excellent job of showing it off. It’s a very expressive instrument. These two pieces that he is playing is part of the main canon for the saxophone, but they are relatively modern, they were written in the last 100 to 150 years. One of the pieces is more modern than the other but it’s got a lot of variation as far as there’s pensive passages, there are passages that are quick and exciting and sparkling and I guess more pensive moments. It’s something that is quite exciting. The second piece is the Concerto for Saxophone, it’s written in more romantic style. That may be a bit more familiar stylistically, but it’s still something different and something that you don’t hear everyday with the symphony orchestra. We’re so fortunate to have Connor coming,” said Chongson.
