New Delhi, Feb 9: Mumbai Police on Friday arrested noted venture capitalist Mahesh Murthy for allegedly stalking a Delhi-based woman on social media. The police arrested the Chief executive officer of Digital Agency Pinstorm in Khar. The woman had registered the complaint with National Commission of Women (NCW) in December last year.

The police, acting on the direction of the commission, said that Murthy was booked under sections 354 (D) (stalking) and 509 (word, act or gesture to outrage modesty of a woman) of the Indian Penal Code. “We have arrested him under sections 354 (D) (stalking) and 509 (word, act or gesture to outrage modesty of a woman) of the Indian Penal Code and under relevant sections of the Information Technology Act,” DNA quoted Ramchandra Jadhav, Senior Inspector, Khar police station as saying.

The commission, after receiving the complaints of many victims, directed Maharashtra’s Director General of Police for his intervention after Murthy posted objectionable, derogatory and sexual remarks and obscene signs on social media platforms.

The commission also directed DGP to take action as the Murthy’s action were tantamount to outraging the modesty of women but also attract action for cybercrime. Murthy, after increasing pressure, had offered his apology for his statements on social media.
