Show of strength by North Korea before Games

North Korea put its intercontinental ballistic missiles on show yesterday at a military parade in Pyongyang on the eve of the opening of the Winter Olympics in the South.

In a rousing speech, Mr Kim Jong Un declared his country a "world class military power". He also told the military to remain on high alert to prevent any violation of the country's sovereignty.

Analysts, however, said the parade seemed smaller than those in previous years. No foreign journalists were invited, nor was it broadcast live on state television - in a possible attempt to tone down the rhetoric ahead of the Games.

The North is on a charm offensive towards the South, sending a high-level delegation to the Olympics that includes Mr Kim's sister Kim Yo Jong. She will attend the opening ceremony today, joining officials from China, Japan and the United States.
