Udayanga says he was set free by Interpol as no red notice

(MENAFN - Colombo Gazette) /wp-content/uploads/2018/02/Udayanga.jpg">Sri Lanka's former Ambassador to Russia Udayanga Weeratunga says he has been set free by Interpol in Dubai as there was no Red Notice against him.

In a statement on his Facebook page, Weeratunga said that he was detained at the Dubai airport on February 4 while on transit to the United States.

He said that after being questioned by Interpol in Dubai he was set free as it was found there was no Interpol Red Notice against him or any allegations internationally.

Law and Order Minister Sagala Ratnayake had said this week that a team of eight will visit Dubai to bring Udayanga Weeratunga back to SriLanka.

"The team will include officials from the FCID, CID, Foreign Ministry, AG's Department and Immigration Dept. They will liaise with Dubai authorities to make it happen," he had said.

Weeratunga is wanted in Sri Lanka over the case on the controversial MiG aircraft deal.

The former diplomat said that as a result of the allegations against him he will not return to Sri Lanka. (Colombo Gazette)
