New Delhi, Feb 9 (IANS) The Delhi government on Friday notified ‘The Delhi Anand Marriages Rules 2018’ under which marriages of Sikhs would be registered in the capital, instead of the Hindu Marriage Act, Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot said.
“Delhi government notifies The Delhi Anand Marriages Rules, 2018. Long pending demand of the Sikh community fulfilled,” Gahlot said in a tweet.
Till now, though Sikhs got married through the ceremony of ‘Anand Karaj’, their marriage was validated using the Hindu Marriage Act in the city.
Gahlot added that the government is committed to “work for protection of rights of all communities”.
Meanwhile, both the ruling Aam Aadmi Party as well as the Bharatiya Janata Party sought to take credit for the move.
“This is a 110-year-old demand by the Sikh community. It was taken up by us (AAP) in the Assembly (Delhi) in 2015 and this happened due to Kejriwal’s initiative,” said AAP MLA Jarnail Singh.
Meanwhile BJP MLA Majinder Singh Sirsa credited Lt. Governor Anil Baijal for the development.
“We wholeheartedly thank Lt. Governor Anil Baijal ji for implementing Anand Marriage Act in Delhi. This action has fulfilled 110-years old pending demand of Sikhs,” he said in a tweet.
