Mathoho wants to end Chiefs' trophy drought

2018-02-09 10:47

Cape Town - Kaizer Chiefs defender Eric Mathoho hopes the Soweto giants will end their nearly three-year silverware drought by winning the Nedbank Cup.

The 27-year-old joined Amakhosi at the beginning of the 2012/2013 season and the 2013 Nedbank Cup was his first cup trophy as a Glamour Boy.

“It’s the dream of every footballer to play in a cup final,” Mathoho recalls as quoted by the club’s official website.

“We beat SuperSport United thanks to a goal in extra time from Bernard Parker. It gave me an amazing feeling, it was awesome.”

Amakhosi have won the National Cup competition 13 times. The first came in 1971 when Chiefs beat Orlando Pirates over two legs in the final - it was called Life Challenge Cup at the time.

In 2008, the competition was renamed the named Nedbank Cup.

“Cup games are different,” comments Mathoho about Sunday’s Nedbank Cup Round of 32 fixture against Golden Arrows at FNB Stadium.

“Unlike a league match, only one team progresses to the next round. You win or you go out.

“We haven’t won a cup in nearly three years. So, this has to be ours. There is, however, still a long road to go and we have to treat each game as a final.

“It won’t be an easy game against Arrows. They are a hard team to beat, which means that we will need to come out fighting.”

Mathoho has started in 167 (league and cup) games since joining Chiefs, coming on in a further nine. He has found the back of the net 16 times.

Kick-off is at 15:30.
