Now that the tottering wreck that has been Police Scotland finally crashed and burned with the, perhaps inevitable, resignation of Chief Constable Phil Gormley the only question today is not so much What’s Next, but Who’s Next?

Our tribunes will worry, and not without cause, about the former issue and try to work out how they can return the nation’s guardians to anything like their former status as an, in the main, uniformed but always disciplined and normally respected public body.

The bobbies on the beat (such as they are) have enjoyed pretty much the universal support of the man and woman in the street, but higher up the ranks Police Scotland has become a laughing stock with its boss, and several of his under-bosses, suspended from active duty.
