Nexon reports record-high performance in 2017

SEOUL, Feb. 8 (Yonhap) -- Online gaming firm Nexon Co. on Thursday reported record-breaking annual performance for last year on the back of strong sales in overseas markets.

Operating income soared 123 percent on-year to 885.6 billion won (US$813.8 million) in 2017, and sales jumped 28 percent to 2.29 trillion won, the company said in a regulatory filing.

The strong results for 2017 were due to the sound performance of the company's mobile games business in global markets, including Japan and China.

Revenues from overseas markets came to 1.51 trillion won, 66 percent of the total, in 2017 to surpass the 1.5-trillion won mark for the first time.

However, the company, which has long been considered gaming giant, handed its No.1 position to its local rival Netmarble Games Corp., which reported 2.42 trillion won in sales last year.

Nexon was founded in South Korea in 1994, but its headquarters is based in Japan. The company's stocks were listed on the Tokyo stock exchange in late 2011.
