Jessica Biel and Justin Timberlake are proud parents to their 2-year-old son, Silas Randall. And it turns out they’re teaching little Silas about the birds and the bees at a pretty young age.
Biel explained her philosophy during the 2018 MAKERS conference in Los Angeles on Tuesday, while promoting a sex-ed PSA video she made with Chelsea Handler. She said that she believes in being open and honest about sex education with her son, Silas, even though he’s still very young. Here’s what she said, according to People:
“I have a 2½-year-old [and] we’re starting [sexual education] now. We’re using technical terms … we shower together, and [we say], ‘This is what I’ve got. This is what you’ve got.’ We just talk about it. I know it’s really young, but I really believe that if you start this early, there’s no shame. I don’t want to tell him, ‘Keep your private parts,’ and this and that. It’s a beautiful thing. You have it and mine is different and it’s cool, man. We have to respect ourselves and respect each other. So I believe it starts really young.”
The Mayo Clinic notes that sex education usually starts as an anatomy lesson when kids are toddlers, which seems like exactly what Biel and Timberlake are teaching little Silas. And PBS reports that schools in the Netherlands start teaching sex education when kids are just 4, so Biel’s philosophy definitely has some backup from experts.
Biel is one of the cofounders of the Tryst Network, a website that answers women’s questions about sex and relationships. She released a PSA for the network alongside Chelsea Handler — although this one might be a bit too mature for little Silas.
