Here are five things you need to know today, Thursday, February 8th:
1) Property taxes are going up in King County. On average, it will be a 17 percent increase. However, in Carnation, property tax bills will spike more than 31 percent. This will not only affect homeowners but also tenants who would see their rent increase because of the property taxes.

2) Ariana Kukors, a 2012 Olympic swimmer from Auburn, Wash., says a former U.S. Olympic team coach began sexually abusing her at age 16. Kukors says assistant coach Sean Hutchison started child "grooming" her -- a practice used by child predators to gain a victim's trust -- when she was 13 years old after he became her coach at KING Aquatic Club in Federal Way.

3) Seattle has now rolled out an aggressive plan to disarm abusers before they have a chance to strike. A new police unit seizes weapons from accused abusers to make domestic violence victims safer. It may be the first program of its kind in the country.

4) Drowsy driving plays a role in nearly eight times more severe accidents than federal estimates suggest, according to study released Thursday by the car and travel group AAA. The study found that 9.5% of all crashes involved drowsy drivers, based on the portion of time the drivers’ eyes were closed in the minutes before a crash.

5) It's the eve of the Opening Ceremony at the PyeongChang Winter Olympics in South Korea, but the competition gets started tonight on KING 5. For the first time in over 20 years, the NBC network broadcast is being shown live coast-to-coast, so fans in Seattle will see it at the same time as those in New York.
