We know you're probably sick of cute octopus videos at this point but please, bear with us.
The Virginia Aquarium posted a video of octopuses (yes "octopuses" is grammatically correct, nerds) hatching and displaying their colour-changing abilities.

Apparently the babies went dark straight away because it was so freakin' weird they were firing off chromatophores (colour-changing cells) like nobody's business.
It seemed like the stress of hatching caused the chromatophores to fire almost immediately before settling down. (All the hatches we witnessed had the same progression.)
