Warrant: Hope Mills man let dog freeze to death

A Hope Mills man is accused of letting his dog freeze to death during the cold snap in early January, according to a warrant in the Cumberland County magistrate's office.

Alexander Raphael Grose, 27, of the 5700 block of Medius Lane, was charged Wednesday with felony cruelty to animals. Grose left his dog tethered to a post outside without "adequate shelter," on Jan. 8, the arrest warrant said.

The overnight low on Jan. 8 was 14 degrees, according to AccuWeather records. The low on Jan. 7 was 9 degrees.

Grose also is charged with misdemeanor assault inflicting serious injury.

He is accused of assaulting Jamal Thomas on Christmas Day, hitting him in the head, face and body with his fist and an unknown object, the warrant said.

Thomas suffered fractures around his right eye, bleeding in the eye, cuts, severe swelling around the eye and a temporary loss of vision, the warrant said.

Bail was set at $2,000 for the animal cruelty charge and $2,500 for the assault offense.
