University of Alabama fans can show their support on the water beginning in March when the state plans to begin issuing collegiate vessel registration stickers.

The registration sticker, which is displayed on the bow of the vessel, is similar to the collegiate tag programs for motorcycles and cars with a portion of the fees funding scholarships. UA’s will feature the script “A” and a crimson-and-white color scheme.

The vessel sticker will cost $50 above the normal registration and annual renewal charges and is available for purchase at county department of revenue offices. The Tuscaloosa license office said it did not have the stickers yet but expected them soon.

The state plans to roll out the new stickers on March 1, according to Suzanne Turner, boat registration supervisor for the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency.

The registration and annual renewal fees range from $18-$98 based on length of the vessel and include a $2 issuance fee. Boat owners would have to choose to renew the $50 collegiate vessel sticker annually, Turner said.

The $50 would be split among UA and state agencies. UA and the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources would each receive $20 or the proceeds with the remaining $10 split among ALEA and the department of corrections.

Lawmakers passed a bill last year approving the new stickers for organizations and universities who were part of the state’s distinctive license tag programs with approved plates.

Like the collegiate plates for cars and motorcycles, the new UA boat stickers will fund graduate and undergraduate scholarships, according to David Wilson, director of Alumni funds, for the UA National Alumni Association

“The legislators said who we can really make a difference in education, and add value to students here in the state,” Wilson said.
