The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office engaged a two-day effort last week to verifiy the registered addresses of convicted sex offenders, according to Sheriff Jeff Shaver.
Deputies and investigators and the U.S. Marshal’s Service worked to perform compliance checks in Operation Vigilant Star 2 – the second such operation conducted by the office.
Operation Vigilant Star was organized in 2016 by Chief Investigator Josh Summerford and Investigator Michael Green in conjunction with the District Attorney’s Office, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, and the United States Marshals’ Service to ensure that registered sex offenders in Cherokee County were abiding by the Sex Offender Registration/Notification Act.
“The operation was a huge success and found that only one registered offender was not in compliance with SORNA,” Shaver said. “That offender was arrested on Tuesday and booked into the Cherokee County Detention Center and charged with a SORNA violation.”
Shaver commended the deputies and investigators involved for their efforts in the operation and expressed his appreciation to the U.S. Marshals’ Service and Marshal C.M. Keely for their support of the operation.
