Textiles, Commerce and Industries Minister Shri Thongam Biswajit Singh today felicitated Langpoklakpam Subadani Devi on her receiving Padmashree, one of the country’s highest civilian honour. The simple felicitation was organised by the Directorate of Handloom and Textiles at the Conference Hall of Minister Biswajit’s office at New Secretariat.
Lauding Padmashree Subadani, Minister Biswajit said that her recognition is a rare feat and will certainly encourage and inspire local weavers. He added the recognition has once again proved to the country that Manipur has a rich cultural heritage in the field of traditional handloom.
He said that considering the lack of a proper platform for the weavers to market their finished products, the government under the initiative of the Governor has initiated the Mission for Economic Empowerment of Traditional Artisans/Craftsmen (MEETAC). This will help and promote the local weavers and artisans, he added.
Expressing hope that she would bring more laurels to the country and the State, the Minister congratulated and conveyed his best wishes for her future endeavours.
Padmashree Subadani expressed her happiness on receiving the award and at the same time expressed gratitude to the Minister and the department for the felicitation.

She said that she started weaving from the early age of 13 years and received a State Award in 1992 followed by a National Award in 1993. She hails from Wangkhei Tokpam Leikai and was the founder secretary of the Nongdon Lairembi Handloom Cooperative Society Ltd and also founder secretary of the Shiva Handloom & Handicrafts Cooperative Society Ltd.
Padmashree Subadani said she will also continue to nurture young and talented weavers of the State so that they may also bring more recognition to the State’s traditional handloom and handicraft products.
Langpoklakpam Subadani Devi was among the 73 recipients of the Padmashree 2018. Langpoklakpam Subadani Devi, a traditional weaver is recipient of many prestigious awards including Sant Kabir Award in Handloom for promoting and preserving traditional way of making clothes.
In recognition of her achievement, Minister Biswajit handed Rs. One lakh to Padmashree Subadani Devi. The felicitation ceremony was also attended by Principal Secretary Shri P. Vaiphei Director of Handloom and Textiles, Shri Lamlee Kamei and officials of the directorate.
