The Baytown Sun invites readers to nominate residents of Greater Baytown who have made a difference through community service for Citizen of the Year.

Nominations are due Feb. 18. The finalists will be reviewed by former Citizens of the Year and they will choose the winner. The recipient and finalists will be honored at a ceremony here at the Sun offices in late March.

The award recognizes people who have made Greater Baytown a better place through their exemplary volunteerism and service.

This annual exercise always turns into an enlightening experience for us. As the nominations come in — some of them feature a great deal of documentation — we learn a lot about some of the extraordinary people who work so tirelessly for the betterment of this community. It’s sometimes genuinely exhausting to consider what some of these people do to lend a helping hand and to make life better for the people of Baytown and beyond.

But they do, and Greater Baytown is a better place for it.

The list of past winners tells you a lot about the nature of this award and the character of the people who are nominated. All of them have made an impact in some way. Some of them are well known; others may not be instantly recognized. None of them do what they do for this kind of recognition; they take much greater pride and pleasure in the service they provide to others.

So let us know who you think should be The Baytown Sun 2018 Citizen of the Year.

Nominations can be mailed to The Baytown Sun, PO Box 90, Baytown, Texas 77522, or faxed to 281-427-5252, or submitted online at www.baytownsun.com, where you can click the link for Citizen of the Year, or email your nominations to janie.gray@baytownsun.com or david.bloom@baytownsun.com. Thank you.
