Man beaten to death for demanding dowry

A man has allegedly beaten his son-in-law to death for demanding dowry and torturing his daughter in Badarganj upazila of Rangpur.

The victim was identified as Mozaharul Islam, 27, son of Younus Ali of village Feskipara in Badarganj.

The incident happened at 11:30pm Tuesday night in Khalpara village of the upazila.

Police, quoting family members, said Md Abu Bakkar married off his daughter Shiuli Begum to Mozaharul three years ago. Since the wedding, Mozaharul had been torturing his wife both physically and mentally for dowry.

Shiuli's parents paid Mozaharul several times as per his demands.

Recently, Mozaharul again demanded Tk, 40,000 as dowry from Shiuli's family. When they failed to pay him, he sent his wife back to her parent's home a week ago. On Tuesday, Mozaharul went to his father-in-law's house and locked in altercation with the family regarding the dowry.

At one point, Abu Bakkar took a bamboo stick and started beating Mozaharul, who died on the spot, police said.

Police recovered the body and sent it to Rangpur Medical College Hospital (RMCH) for autopsy.

Jahurul Islam, the deceased's elder brother, filed a murder case against five people, including Abu Bakkar, with Badarganj Police Station on Wednesday.

Akteruzzaman Prodhan, OC of Badarganj Police Station, said they have arrested three people, including the prime suspect, in connection with the killing.
