Two-alarm Goffstown fire leaves one homeless

GOFFSTOWN - A two-alarm fire Wednesday night at an Emerald Circle house left the resident homeless.

The homeowner was shoveling his driveway at 42 Emerald Circle about 7 p.m. when he saw smoke, Fire Chief Richard O'Brien said.

Icy roads delayed firefighters in getting to the scene, O'Brien said.

Firefighters worked in freezing rain and snow that made the ground slippery and dangerous, he said.

The home is outside the hydrant district and water needed to be trucked in. O'Brien said firefighters had enough water and were able to use water from Goffstown Back Road hydrants.

Firefighters remained until about 10 p.m. doing overhaul work, O'Brien said. Extensive damage was done to the home, making it uninhabitable, he said.

The owner will be staying with friends, O'Brien said.

A firefighter suffered a minor hand injury and was treated at the scene, O'Brien said.

Seven departments assisted including Bedford, Bow, Dunbarton, Londonderry, Manchester, New Boston and Weare.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. O'Brien said it doesn't appear to be suspicious.
