In our national bobsled ride down, down, down into the normalization of the abnormal, now we have a report of what President Trump wants for the Russia probe.
He wants a “killer.” This from the guy who said he could shoot someone in the street and his supporters wouldn’t care. Reportedly, “he needs people around him that will put his interests above their own.” Okay, now how many of you simply assumed that sentence was going to end “above the nation’s.” I’m not sure there is that much difference.
Mr. “No-collusion!” is acting kind of funny for someone who continually asserts that there is simply nothing, nothing at all to hide. Why would someone with nothing to hide need someone to protect him at the costs of their own interests or careers? Why in a land of innocence do not all the interests align toward transparency and honorable performance of jobs without anyone having to sacrifice themselves for the protection of the president? Why the need for a “killer”?
What is Trump worried about? Here he is, president of the United States, with a long history of an independent judiciary to assess the merits of any findings from the probe led by Robert S. Mueller III, who by the way is a Republican. He has the House of Representatives, which would any impeachment charges, in the hands of the Republican Party. He has the Senate, which would vote on any impeachment conviction, in the hands of the Republican Party. All of these august Republicans stacked high on top of behavior that Trumps insists was completely innocent. And yet he apparently feels he needs a “killer” to protect him. Exactly who or what needs to be killed?
You don’t need to call in Sherlock Holmes to think that something doesn’t add up here. The only way to even try to explain this is that it’s all a giant, secret conspiracy against Trump, and as it happens, that is exactly what Trump and his minions have been trying to imply. Without the benefit of any evidence this side of the laugh test.
So Trump wants a “killer” now. Nice little democracy you have there. Be a shame if something should happen to it.
