One wife of the official has even produced pictures of her blackened eye alleging that it was a result of physical abuse that she suffered at the hands of Rob Porter.
The matter came to light when the FBI contacted Porter's ex-wives while they were reviewing his security clearance. Both the wives informed the FBI about his abusive behaviour. But it was only when Daily Mail reported the allegations that the matter received attention to an extent that Porter has reportedly offered to resign, although he had earlier been denying allegations of physical abuse.
In a statement that he has issued, Porter has claimed that the "reality behind them (the photos) is nowhere close to what is being described". He also claimed that a smear campaign was being run based on the allegations. Talking about his resignation, he has said that he "will seek to ensure a smooth transition when he leaves the White House."
John Kelly also issued a statement that he has accepted Porter's resignation but also said that he deserves an opportunity of being heard. He has also stated that "there is no place for domestic violence in our society".
There have been reports of Porter's second wife also receiving a temporary emergency protective order in 2010 after Porter allegedly refused to leave her residence.
