The San Diego Vaqueros had three players earn all-state honors in the Texas Sports Writers Association Class 3A All-State Team, which was announced Wednesday.

Senior defensive back Abel Casas was again named all-state. Casas, who led San Diego’s defense as a cornerback, made Second Team All-State in the secondary. Casas was listed 5-foot-10 and 165 pounds, but he earned the respect of opposing offenses with his ability to get to the football.

Cases, who was also named to the Associated Press Sports Writers 3A All-State team for this season, completed this season with seven interceptions, including three which he returned for touchdowns. He also had 35 tackles and four blocked extra points.

San Diego senior Ryan Briones also made the all-state team. The speedy ball carrier was named Third Team All-State as a kick returner. Briones was primarily a slot receiver for the Vaqueros, but filled in on special teams and as a running back. In just seven games as the starting running back, Briones rushed for 1,075 yards.

Freshman Sergio Guerra, who made a name for himself by finishing the season with five interceptions, including one for a touchdown and 120 tackles, was an honorable mention on the all-state team.
