Readers expect news addressing pay issues

The Feb. 1 Gazette reported that Jeffrey Good had been “removed from his role” as executive editor of the Greenfield Recorder and Daily Hampshire Gazette (“Editor claims firing over pay equity issues,” Feb. 1).

Good claimed he was fired “for advocating for pay equity” for his female staff. Publisher Michael Rifanburg rebutted by saying there have been “ongoing efforts … since 2016” to address differences in pay. “Since 2016” is far too long for an investigation such as this and raises questions about the publisher’s sincerity in establishing fair pay practices.

Rifanburg and the newspapers’ owners are now on notice. Readers will be looking for reports on an immediate investigation of possible pay disparities — and progress in correcting inequities.
