READERS have had their say on the imminent changes to the A64’s speed limit - with average speed check cameras coming into force from Monday between Bramham and Tadcaster.

The bright yellow cameras are already in place along a five-mile stretch of the dual carriageway and will be switched on from Monday to slow traffic down to 40mph while workers replace the central reservation.

The Press revealed on Monday how Highways England will take between two and three months to complete the work before moving the cameras, and workforce, closer to York - between Tadcaster and Askham Bar - to complete work on another five mile stretch of the central reservation.

Readers greeted the news with a mix of dismay and anger on The Press’s website and social media channels, reading the report hundreds of thousands of times to make it one of the most read stories of the year.

One commenter posting as Ouseswimmer said: “In Belgium they did this same work in one month.

“The UK prefers it to take ages so the speed fines pay for the roadworks.”

Medivac Mike said: “Is there any reason why this work could not be done at night, there are such things as floodlights, plus I bet they leave the cameras working whilst there are no works ongoing as well.”

Whitetornado questioned the timing of the work: “Why didn’t they do this central reservation work when they had the other roadworks on these stretches over the past couple of years?”

Some recognised the cameras were being put in place to look out for the workers, including Gill Mulroe, on Facebook, who posted: “I do love how every self-centred person in this post is complaining about the impact to them, while missing the point that this is about the safety of the people who will be carrying out repairs on the A64.”

However, Gooseberry Legs supported the speed cameras, saying: “They should make the speed limit on the A64 40mph permanently, speed cameras should be introduced along the entire stretch of this road then there will be less serious accidents and deaths on this road.”

Gary Cooper said: “Just observe the speed limit - it will delay you all of two minutes.”

Drivers caught breaking the speed limit will receive three points on their licence and a £100 fine.
