An armed, suicidal suspect barricaded himself in his Ormond Beach home for close to five hours — and was joined by his female companion for most of that time — until law enforcement convinced him to come outside and surrender, authorities said.
Ormond Beach police responded around 2:10 p.m. to 279 Roosevelt Drive, located one block west of the intersection of Fairview and South Ridgewood avenues, according to the Volusia County Sheriff's Office.
Police responded after receiving a call from the man's concerned companion, who drove to the house and stayed with the armed suspect until she was convinced to come outside around 6:10 p.m., said Ormond Beach Police Officer Keith Walker, an agency spokesman.
Walker said the man, who was "armed (and) barricaded)" throughout the ordeal, finally agreed to come outside and surrender shortly after 7 p.m.
Police had advised motorists to avoid that area of South Ridgewood, which is a short distance southeast of downtown Ormond Beach.
Walker said his agency was not releasing the names of the man and woman until Thursday .
