We all need a little compassion in life and D Balu, the headmaster of a municipal higher secondary school at Villupuram in Tamil Nadu rightly understandS it. If you recently came across a series of pictures of an elderly man holding hands or kneeling down in front of people, he is the headmaster of a school in Tamil Nadu. The teacher doesn’t believe in harsh punishments to his pupils, he, in fact, joins hands in front of his students pleading them to attend school regularly.

Students not attending school is quite a normal thing in the region he teaches, so D Balu decided to change the norm by doing something unique. To ensure a pupil’s attendance he also goes to their homes and requests the parents too. Video and pictures of Balu folding hands had gone viral recently. The News Minute quoted him as saying, “The student in the video studies in the 12th standard. He was not attending school regularly and so I was begging him to get an education so that he can progress in life.”

He said, “I have personally visited the homes of over 150 students who attend my school and requested them in this manner to study well and attend classes regularly. He has been doing the same for the past three years when and it helped him bring closer to pupils. Balu’s initiative comes at a time when many students in Tamil have been committing suicide over alleged harassment from teachers.

He further said, “I usually spend weekends to travel to the neighbouring villages where they come from to convince them. I understand that shouting at them or even hitting them will only provoke and anger them. It won’t bring about any transformation in their behaviour or encourage them to study,” he adds.
