NEW DELHI: The Congress on Thursday slammed Prime Minister
Narendra Modi as "anti-women" for his "derogatory remark" against its MP
Renuka Chowdhury in
Parliament yesterday.
It also asked
Rajya Sabha chairman and vice president
Venkaiah Naidu to "not act in a partisan manner."
"We condemn PM Modi's derogatory remark in the Parliament against former Union Minister and RS MP Renuka Chowdhury. We also urge the RS Speaker Shri Venkaiah Naidu to not act in a partisan manner and accord due respect to a fellow member of the house. #ModiAntiWomen," the party's official handle tweeted.
The party also protested PM Modi's comments in the Rajya Sabha, which was then adjourned till 12 pm, reported ANI.
PM Modi had yesterday in Parliament called Chowdhury out for laughing during his remarks on Aadhaar.
"SabhapatiJi meri aapse vinti hai Renuka Ji ko kuch mat kahiye. Ramayan serial ke baad aisi hansi sunne ka saubhagya aaj jaake mila hai. (Chairman sir, I request you to not say anything to Renukaji. After Ramayan serial, we have got the privilege of hearing this kind of laughter today)," the PM had said.
Naidu criticised Chowdhury for her "unruly behaviour."
"I will have to name you Renukaji for your unruly behaviour," Naidu had said.
Later, while talking to reporters, Chowdhury had said that she did not wish to respond to PM Modi's remarks, adding that he had denigrated the status of a woman.
"PM made a personal remark, what else do you expect from him? I can't fall to that level to reply to him. This is actually called denigrating the status of a woman," ANI quoted her as saying.
