A MAJOR fire has broken out near the athlete’s village for the South Korea Winter Olympics, journalists at the event have revealed on social media.

Journalists in South Korea for the Winter Olympics confirmed the fire on social media

Pictures circulating on Twitter show a large amount of smoke rising from an apartment block at the South Korea sports hub.

The incident has happened on the eve of the international sporting event, which is due to hold its opening ceremony tomorrow.

One person wrote on Twitter: “An emergency alert just blasted phones here in South Korea.

“Looks like it's due to the massive fire we have a front-row seat for in our 16th-floor apartment.”

Meanwhile, sports reporter Dan Barnes said: “Looks like an apartment fire near Gangneung Media Village.”
