VACANT SEATS: Only a small crowd for Joey Barton's university speech

The former Burnley and Man City star gave a talk to eggheads at Cambridge University.

Celebrity speakers, including the cast of telly’s Love Island, are normally a big draw in the historic building.

But only a handful turned up to listen to Barton, who is currently banned from playing after breaking betting rules.

“Don’t get too high. Don’t get too low”

Joey Barton

In his speech, Joey, 35, insisted he had “no doubt” that he would have captained England if he had been more mature – despite only winning one cap.

When asked who his favourite philosopher was, he chose Epicurus, an ancient Greek who taught that happiness could be achieved through the pursuit of simple pleasures and moderation.

“Don’t get too high. Don’t get too low,” said Joey, who was once jailed for assault.

“Don’t get too frustrated when things don’t go well.”

Then he added: “If I’d have learned that at 21, as opposed to 31, I’d have captained England. No doubt about it.”
