Rookie needs some schooling

Two things: first, many thanks to the estimable vegetable Eric Bahrt, The Nation’s conscience and arbiter of sober good taste, for his warm words of understanding on Saturday. It’s always comforting to know that there are people out there who, like me, offer calm, balanced and conciliatory gestures.

Now, we have Mr “Greg Mellor”, another of those mysterious here-today-gone-tomorrow characters who disappears when his usefulness to his inventor is at an end. The principal clue is: “I tend to think Mr Pike has a better interpretation of the facts than other theories being put forward.” Right, got that. Of course Mr Pike has, with his plethora of bona fide scientific and academic resources, rational propositions, and of course his well-known democratic tolerance of all peoples that he unfailingly advances to state his case.

Let’s however assume for now that “Greg Mellor” really is a Bangkok version of “Angry of Chipping Sodbury”, and hereby vents his shocked spleen at the antics of various regular correspondents, myself included obviously.

The answer is so simple that even this Johnny-come-lately who seems to know little about the Insult Trade here, and all those who indulge in it, should be able to grasp this: The final decision to publish rests not with me or Nigel Pike or whomever, but The Nation’s editorial staff. And if it’s good enough for them, it’s good enough for me. Problem? Then take it up with those worthy personages.

Finally, this quote from Henri Nouwen, “Greg Mellor”, tells you all you need to know: “Did I offer peace today? Did I bring a smile to someone’s face? Did I say words of healing? Did I let go of my anger and resentment? Did I forgive? Did I love? These are the real questions. I must trust that the little bit of love that I sow now will bear many fruits, here in this world and the life to come.”
