An astrophysics team led by Prof. K. Yugindro Singh of the Department of Physics, Manipur University observed the spectacular total lunar eclipse of January 31, 2018 successfully.

Other members participating in the team were Dr. I. Ablu Meitei, Assistant Professor, Modern College and Dr. S. Ajitkumar Singh.

The observation was carried out using a Celestron telescope and the entire duration of the total lunar eclipse was video recorded.

The lunar started as a partial eclipse at 5.18 PM soon after moon- rise and became total eclipse starting from 6.21PM and ending at 7.38PM and the eclipse ended at 8.42 PM.

This lunar eclipse is considered as a super special event with rare coincidence of a blue moon and a super full moon.

A total lunar eclipse occurs when the moon enters the earth's umbral shadow.
