Baleswar jail gets canteen for inmates

A canteen for jail inmates in Baleswar jail campus, constructed under the reform and welfare programmes of the Prisons Department, was inaugurated by Additional Director General (ADG), Prisons Binyananda Jha here recently.

Jha said that the inmates would no longer depend on their relatives for daily use items and snacks. They can procure the same from the canteen. The inmates undergoing imprisonment, while get `40 per day as remuneration, can buy snacks from the canteen, he added.

He also said it is the third jail in the State after Choudwar and Jharpada jails to have such a canteen facility for the inmates.

Jail Superintendent Surendra Patnaik said the canteen has been opened with initial amount `25,000 from the welfare fund and the jail staffs would be engaged in it. The organic farming and vermi compost plans are underway, he added.

The jail has also planned to open a furniture manufacturing unit after skilling interested inmates and opening of a petrol outlet in its campus, Patnaik added.

Among others, district Collector Ramesh Chandra Rout, ADM MM Pani and other jail officials were present.
