The BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia was taken to the central jail in Old Dhaka from Bakshibazar Special Court-5 in the city following her conviction on Thursday.

She will be kept at the day care centre of the jail, once used for the children of the prisoners. Two rooms on the ground floor of the three-storey building have been allotted for her.

Khaleda's lawyers have expressed their willingness to move for appeal after getting the certified copy of the verdict.

The BNP chief will have to stay in the day care centre until she gets bail.

Earlier, the court sentenced Khaleda to five years of imprisonment in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case.

A white car, carrying the BNP chief, left the court around 3pm and reached the jail gate around 3:13 pm.

Quoting Khaleda, her lawyer Sanaullah Mia said the party Chairperson before entering into court called upon the leaders and activists as well  as country people to remain calm and quite.

"She said that no conviction and repression can make her weak. She fell victim to injustice. The party chief also said that  the country people are with her," said Sanaullah Mia, quoting her.
