The Sturgis Township Board on Monday tabled a request from the city of Sturgis to make a one-time contribution of $1,000 toward installation of a disc golf course at Cade Lake Park.
Township supervisor George Morse and trustee Judy Pappas were absent from the meeting, and board members determined that they wanted the full board in attendance to make a decision about an expenditure of this size.
Clerk Mike Bobalik said Pappas had expressed dissatisfaction with the expense while Morse had spoken favorably of it.
The cost of the 18-hole installation will be about $17,500. The city of Sturgis has taken the lead on fundraising for the project, asking townships, businesses and foundations in the surrounding area to contribute toward its construction in an effort to see it built this summer. The completed course will be maintained by St. Joseph County Parks and Recreation.
“It’s a recreational activity available to all,” Bobalik said of disc golf, which is similar to golf but involves aiming flying discs at targets such as elevated metal baskets.
