In this role you will be managing the full portfolio of public advisory engagements related to carbon pricing from sourcing to implementation. In addition, you will contribute to South Pole’s (SP) strategy and service offering in the field of carbon pricing. This challenging position requires an enthusiastic and dynamic sustainability professional with relevant experience in consultancy and business development within the public sector. If you have proven expertise in carbon pricing and carbon markets, as well as in-depth know-how in international climate policy under the UNFCCC and national/subnational climate policy and pricing instruments, then we are looking for you!

Tasks and responsibilities

  • Manage a portfolio of public advisory engagements related to carbon pricing, including:
    • Design, plan and implement carbon pricing public advisory projects
    • Lead the technical implementation of advisory projects and review projects managed by other colleagues form a technical perspective
    • Oversee the financial aspect of advisory projects
    • Manage project teams for specific advisory projects, including SP consultants in all six continents and external partners, ensuring high quality outputs and cost efficiency
  • Be in charge of the business development of advisory engagements in the public sector, with a specific focus on carbon pricing
  • Maintain a good relationship with public advisory clients and strategic partners
  • Acquire new clients and develop new strategic partnerships
  • Contribute to SP’s strategy and service offering in the field of carbon pricing
  • Topics of engagement may include: non-market and market-based carbon pricing and climate policy instruments such as Emission Trading Systems (ETS) or carbon offset schemes, implementation and financing of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement, Measuring, Reporting & Verification (MRV) systems, and Climate Finance

Your profile

  • Minimum a Master’s degree, ideally in Environmental Sciences, Public Policy, Finance, Economics or related disciplines
  • At least 5-7 years of relevant work experience in consultancy and business development in the public sector
  • Proven expertise in carbon pricing and carbon markets
  • In-depth know-how in international climate policy under the UNFCCC, national/subnational climate policy and pricing instruments and financial mechanisms
  • Track record in developing climate change mitigation projects, programs or instruments across sectors and technologies would be an asset
  • Commercial skills and good business sense to be able to identify and seize opportunities in a challenging and competitive market environment
  • Experience in team management, ideally within an international and multicultural context
  • Strong network with International Finance Institutions (IFIs), development agencies, governments and other public or private donors and stakeholders
  • Advanced skills in MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint are essential
  • Excellent oral and written command of English. Proficiency in Spanish, Chinese, Korean, French, German or other languages associated with major carbon pricing system locations is of advantage
  • National, or holder of a valid required work visa in host country
