CLIMAX -- The Providence Grove High School varsity boys basketball team hosted High Point Andrews on Wednesday in a battle between the second-place squads in the Mid-Piedmont Conference. The Red Raiders won 71-60, finishing the game with a 14-0 run to move into second place in the conference (8-3, 8-12) — a game behind Wheatmore. PG is now 7-4 in the PAC, 13-7 overall. Malik Sutton paced the Patriots with 15 points, while Evan Taylor and Kobe Morgan each added 12 and Daylin Locklear chipped in 10.
The Red Raiders won the girls game 67-39 as the PG girls fell to 2-9 in the PAC, 6-14 overall.
Cougars fall to EG
GIBSONVILLE — The Southwestern Randolph High School varsity girls basketball team fell 61-42 to Eastern Guilford on Wednesday in Mid-Piedmont Conference play.
“We were up one at the half and, for three quarters, played as well as we have all year,” SWR coach Seth Baxter said. “We were down four going into the fourth and went cold. We had great shots. I don’t know if it was fatigue.
“Eastern Guilford’s good. They’re the best team in the conference for a reason. We haven’t put four quarters together yet, but we’re getting there.”
Sarah Crews paced the Cougars (5-6, 17-6) with 20 points and 12 rebounds, while Kenzie Whitson added 11 points, five steals and five rebounds.
SWR, the fourth team in the MPC, travels to second-place Southeast Guilford on Friday.
In the boys game, EG won 73-29.
Luke Johnson had 12 points for the Cougars (1-10, 6-17).
NERMS tops SWRMS to open tournament
The fourth-seeded Northeastern Randolph Middle School boys basketball team beat No. 5 Southwestern Randolph 34-28 Wednesday in the opening round of the Randolph County League Basketball Tournament.
Zane Cheek paced NERMS with 15 points, while Caleb Rogers
added eight.
NERMS (8-7) will play in Friday night’s first semifinal at 5:30 p.m. at Eastern Randolph High School, while SWRMS finished the season with a 7-8 record.
Third-seeded RMS defeats No. 6 SERMS
The third-seeded Randleman Middle School boys basketball team beat No. 6 Southeastern Randolph 42-29 Wednesday in the opening round of the Randolph County League Tournament. RMS (9-6) advanced to Friday’s second semifinal at 8:15 p.m. at Eastern Randolph High School.
Jozey Akines paced RMS on Wednesday with 15 points, while Bryson Sweatt added 13.
For SERMS (6-9), Landon Loflin had 12 points with Brody Garner adding 10.
UCAMS wins tourney opener on the road
MOUNT AIRY — The Uwharrie Charter Academy Middle School boys basketball team beat Millennium Charter 61-20 in the opening round of the conference tournament Wednesday.
Alijah Barker had 13 points for UCA, while Mack Zenamur added 12 and Dawson Dunn chipped in eight.
The second round is tomorrow at a site to be determined.
THS upends HPA for Kelly’s 575th win
HIGH POINT — Hunter Neal poured in 27 points to lead the Trinity High School varsity boys basketball team to a key 67-45 Piedmont Athletic Conference win over High Point Andrews on Tuesday night.
Thunder Levy added 11 points and Connor Stanley and Tyler Hammonds had 10 points each for the Bulldogs (6-5, 17-6).
The win was coach Tim Kelly’s 575th of his career.
HPA slips to 7-3 and 7-12.
WHS edges Jets in PAC play
SILER CITY — The Wheatmore High School varsity boys basketball team edged Jordan-Matthews 60-58 Tuesday night in PAC play.
Corey Hudgins had 24 points for the Warriors (9-2, 19-4), while Gavin Rains added 22.
WHS trailed by as many as 11, but came back and tied the game with 2 minutes to play and won the game at the free-throw line, sinking 26 of 35 for the game.
The Warriors travel to High Point Andrews on Friday.
Faith hoops teams swept by DFHS
RAMSEUR — The Faith Christian boys basketball teams were swept by Durham Flight Home School on Tuesday.
DF won the boys game 49-40.
Caleb Daniel led the Eagles (8-13) with 13 points, while Ben Wensil had eight points and Jacob Cassell seven.
DF won the jayvee game 46-23.
Nick Ocheltree notched seven points for Faith (0-13) with Austin Freeman and Shawn Cox each adding six points.
