An Arizona Senate committee has delayed debate on a proposal to boost abortion reporting by doctors, hospitals and the state's Medicaid plan.

The decision by the Health and Human Services Committee came late Wednesday evening after hours of debate on other proposed legislation.

The proposal is so far the only piece of legislation targeting the contentious issue before the Arizona Legislature this year.

Republican Sen. Nancy Barto proposal is tame in comparison to other laws passed by the GOP-led Legislature during each session in the past decade. It would add to already robust reporting requirements by requiring reports on why a woman sought an abortion and specifics of any complications.

Supporters of abortion rights are braced for more proposals because abortion opponents often bring late amendments.
