EASTHAMPTON —  A 31-year-old man and his 2-year-old son fell through the ice of Nashawannuck Pond late Wednesday morning.

The father and son were crossing the pond when the ice broke, the Easthampton Police Department wrote on Facebook.

“Bystanders saw the two fall through the ice, immediately called 911, and helped the victims out of the water,” police said.

Easthampton police and fire departments received a call at 11:20 a.m. The father and son were treated by fire department paramedics and then transported to the hospital to be evaluated, police said.

Police said the incident could have been much worse and urged everyone to stay off the ice.
