MANILA, Philippines — The National University Lady Bulldogs remain an enigma for the Ateneo de Manila University Lady Eagles.
NU weathered a furious rally mounted by the Lady Eagles to remain undefeated in the 80th UAAP women's volleyball tournament 25-19, 25-19, 20-25, 12-25, 15-7 at the FilOil Flying-V Centre in San Juan Wednesday.
The Lady Bulldogs were en route to a straight set victory, but Jhoanna Maraguinot paced Ateneo to send the match to a fifth set.
But NU woke up in time to avoid the upset axe, with Jasmine Nabor firing three consecutive service aces to seal the match and extend their win streak against Ateneo to three.
NU held the distinction as the only team who had given the Lady Eagles their losses in the elimination round last year.
Jaja Santiago continues her MVP-like performance with 26 points, while Jasmine Nabor scored 11 points, seven of which came aces, on top of 29 excellent sets.
Maraguinot topscored for the Lady Eagles with 16 points while Kat Tolentino and Ponggay Gaston added 12 and 10 points, respectively.
With the win, the Lady Bulldogs remain unblemished with a 2-0 win-loss record. Ateneo, meanwhile, drops 0-2 — their worst UAAP start in 10 years.
